In or Out: Hilary Swank in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on May 18, 2011

Hilary Swank attended the 2011 Joyful Heart Foundation Gala at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City in an Oscar de la Renta dress and she hasn’t looked this soft and pretty in ages.

Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2011 Collection Model Anastasia Khodkina

Right? She looks gorgeous. Of course it helps that the dress itself is gorgeous. Possibly due to her somewhat androgynous features, Hils tends to favor fairly severe looks. We always felt that was a mistake on her part. Sure, show off the bod; you’ve got plenty to be proud about, but more often than not, the sleek, sexy looks were a bit off-putting. We loved that Michael Kors getup she wore a couple weeks ago. It had a similar softening effect on her. We’re thinking there’s a new stylist on the scene. Hair and makeup are fine; we’ll accept the matchy earrings because they’re pretty, but we’re not at all sold on the Barbie shoes.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Soft, pretty, and springtime, bitches!

OUT! I know Betty Draper and YOU’RE NO BETTY DRAPER, Hilary!

Minion Opinion on Kim Cattrall’s over-the-rainbow getup was a loudly expressed OUT.

In, I like the dress better without the bow. I don’t like the shoes

      • http://twitter.com/Unclassical Alexandria N

agreed. shoes really ugly, just on their own – i don’t think they would look good with anything. She looks gorgeous here altogether! Luv!

        • http://twitter.com/Unclassical Alexandria N

also, bigger hair would have been better. a little flat

IN. Love her dress. I am not a big fan of her shoes or hair, though. She looks pretty.

In.  Although I can’t do the barbie shoes either.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

Wow she doesn’t look like a man! In!

    • Anonymous

The dress looks like 80s Laura Ashley, the hair is flat with visible roots, and the shoes are ugly. Plus, such a feminine look actually makes her look MORE masculine, in a bad way — it makes her look drag, rather than like the sexy androgynous creature she is. OUT.

IN.  So glad she’s covered up for once and looking soft.  She needs bangs though…

    • Diahna Brown

I’m shocked there’s no love for the shoe that goes, but doesn’t match.  IN.

I know! The shoes faintly pick up the hints of pink … or am I imagining them?!

    • Anonymous

IN. She looks swell. What are “Barbie” shoes, anyway? I think they look fine.

      has she ever tried bangs?

I love this, IN.  Frequently she looks like Matt Damon in drag.  This is nice.  Glad she removed the kerchief.  Don’t like the bridesmaidy shoes.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.lukjanovs Sara Lukjanovs

Oh my god, once you’ve seen it you can’t unsee it. The resemblance is really uncanny.

She looks nice here though. Maybe his sister?

      • Anonymous

Matt Damon in drag is EXACTLY how she normally looks. And that’s not a good thing.
        Thanks for the lols.

OMG yes, too funny. That’s all I will think about now when I see either of them, lol!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1041385327 Kristine Konrad

In, definitely, such a nice change. Whoever picked the shoes was following your advice, though, match the shoes to one of the smallest colors present on the dress, there is the barest hint of pink in the flowery print. I would have chosen a non-Barbie pink, however, and no peep-toe, ugh, I am so done with those…

    • http://twitter.com/SusinHB Susan Siniawsky

thank goodness she didn’t sport the boyscout scarf & playtex rubber gloves as shown on the runway.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Jean-St-Martin/504251897 Lauren Jean St. Martin

Holy skinniness!!! She’s smaller than the model! But gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

So just how do these shoes coordinate with the dress? they aren’t matchy, but neither do they “go.” Is this a case where black would have been a fine choice? Maybe black patent.  Oh, and I had a dress that was very, very similar print/colors in the late 80s. it was my spring go-to work/after work dress.

    • Anonymous

      IN

This is a much better look for her…she doesn’t pull off the va-va-va-voom look at all.

I don’t mind the Barbie shoes as much as I mind the matchy purse and earrings.

    • Amanda in Austin

It bugs me that her shoes are bright pink and her toes are obviously RED.  I don’t advocate matching your toes to your shoes or dress, but she should have changed one or the other. And her hair is very meh. But the dress fits her like a dream and it’s a pretty palette.

    • Anonymous

IN! I love the dress on her. So soft and pretty.

JERRY is styling for OdlR?  Yea Jerry!

In.  But demerits for the shoes — I think it’s the shiny fabric I dislike — and the limp hair.

    • Laura Goulding

I like the new website, but there’s one thing that I really miss from the old website: tags.  In this post, you referred to the Michael Kors outfit she wore a while ago, so with one click at the old website, I could click on “Hilary Swank” and find the Michael Kors dress in question.  Please bring back the tags, or something similar!

      • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

The tags can be found to the left of each post.

      • Anonymous

Also…In the TLo post…if you click on Michael Kors name (in blue,) it is a link that will take you to the post TLo was referring to.

Am I seeing a skinny belt on the model?  I think Hilary’s could’ve used one.  The seamed waistline kind of bothers me.

      • Sara__B

Yes! The dress looks more polished with the skinny belt hiding the seam.

    • Sara__B

IN! She looks fabulous from head to ankles. The shoes? No!

In. But I would have preferred a casual up-do with that neckline.

    • Patty Wetli

Ditto on the bangs comment. Pet peeve of mine. Actresses in general seem opposed to bangs. Not sure why they’re all so proud of their foreheads. Well, besides the Botox.

    • Brooke Rich

Um I can’t stand the nail color + shoes combo. That’s what bothers me most about this outfit.  And now I have to go wash my hands 100 times.

    • MilaXX

Pretty and I like the choice of shoe. I don’t think I’ve loved a look of hers like this in a long time. Yes the red toe nails clash with the shoe color, but that’s a very minor quibble.
      IN

    • Anonymous

I thought the model was styled much better; her red lipstick, gloves, and perfect shoes say “Audrey Hepburn at the Louvre” to me.  Hilary Swank’s styling says “Aunt Gerty at the Luau.”

IN! She looks great. The dress looks good on her. Don’t like the shoes with this dress.

    • Anonymous

This is good on her. I only disagree about “sleek,” because my complaint about her is that she tries to fight her androgynous looks by going too girlygirl.  This is feminine, but the lines are simple and the overall look is sophisticated. I think she looks great. Though she could use a haircut.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

In. Even if I don’t care for her as an actress or for her trailer trash vibe (yes, I am hanging my head in shame at this comment but it’s true). The softer look suits her and I actually like the Barbie shoes, not crazy about her hair though. With a few exceptions, the recent styling of stars’ hair looks more in tune to hitting happy hour with the girls rather than attending a dressy event.

    • Judy_J

Love all of it but the shoes.  She looks great!

Pretty good.  I kind of liked the kerchief at the top of the dress and the belt, but thank God she didn’t wear those hideous green Dexter gloves.  Hair is so-so, makeup is very pretty, earrings fine.  Shiny shoes=prom, but at least they weren’t matchy.

    • Anonymous

In.  Hate the shoes along with all the other minions.

Beautiful dress, beautiful colors.  The shoes are hiddy, her hair is too limp for my taste, but they pale in comparison to the beauty of the dress.  She’s IN!

IN. I actually like the shoes. I am used to going against the minion grain, though.

IN.  Soft ‘n’ Pretty works for her.  The shoes, however are an OUT.  I don’t mind the color, but the style just isn’t working.  This color in a classic Louboutin peep toe and then we have something to discuss.  These just look like some cast-off shoes DTM a bridesmaid dress.  And note to Hillary (or her gays): If you’re going hot pink with the shoe, do NOT go orange/red with the pedi!

Better than the runway: nearly everything.  Hair, makeup, accessories, the way Hil fills it out, shoes, and more.

Worse than the runway: no belt.  A belt would’ve been a nice addition, but that’s a nitpick.

This dress is so IN.  One of her better looks of the year.

IN.  That is a pretty dress but we see actresses and their stylists screw up pretty dresses all the time.  This one looks great, like it so much better without the odd scarf thing tied at the neck.  I don’t even mind the pretty shoes.  Way to go Hil!

IN, but I have to nitpick – I don’t love the pink shoes with this.

In, though the hair could certainly use some work.

    • Anonymous

IN. She looks great, though I’m not in love with the hair. It looks, I don’t know, unpolished?  It looks like anyone’s hair who fixed their hair, left for work at 7 a.m., primped it in the ladies’ at 7:45 and now it’s noon, not like someone who left for an event To Be Photographed.

The shoe works.  Would have been nicer if there was more grey in the pink.  The earrings are too big and too green.  Hair is not great, but generally an “in.”

In.  Thank God she isn’t still trying so hard to show off the boob job. In fact, the dress seems to flatten her out a bit.  Could have used a little more color on the lips, but that’s just nit-pickin’.

In. So very in. I love the whole look including the fun shoes. And definitely without that dumb shawl/bandana – wtf is that? Who cares, Hil was smart enough to leave it at home.

    • Joyce VG

IN.  Her eyes looks weird but no matter. She looks very pretty in that dress.

    • Margot Brose

Those are gorgeous earrings, but the shoes go beyond not matching to just looking terrible. And the dress… oh, the dress. You’re definitely right that it pulls her out of androgyny, but to me it feels like she stole it from a costume store’s ‘Mad Men and/or June Cleaver’ section. It’s more costume than couture, you know? I think another woman could have made it feel like fashion, but it doesn’t work on her.

those shoes should be dragged into the street and shot. Babe needs to visit her colorist, too. In spite of her hot earrings and looking really rather nice in the dress, OUT.

I can understand her not wanting to look like a total upper middle class suburban matron, but shiny pink shoes are a lazy way to go about it.  Sad, because this was on the way to working.  So: In-n-n-n-n, then OUT.  (Still better than that Michael Kors early 80s get-up, though.)

I think the shoes would have been better if they were more delicate.  Not necessarily naked shoes just softer shoes.  They weigh it down too much but I LOVE the dress on her.  I like it better with the styling she has than with the styling on the runway.  IN.

IN, definitely.  Glad she lost the bandanna/neckerchief, and from what I can see of the clutch, I don’t care for it.  Personally I like the shoes, I think they make the whole look a little more fun.  Agree with all the negative comments about the hair.  I don’t understand: why on earth would you go out in designer clothes to a big gala where you know there will be photographers, and not bother to comb your hair?

It also bothers me that she will be forever identified as, “Two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank….”, because I am not a fan of her acting.  But that’s another bitter kitten meow.
