“Hip Pop” for W Magazine

Posted on May 13, 2011

Precious unborn fawns, the sun is shining and the work week is drawing to a close. Before we all rush out the door to get drunk, let’s pause and take in some bright colors and wild prints to refresh our souls. Besides, if we wait until after you get drunk, it might all be too much for you to handle and no one wants to kick off the weekend by throwing up and passing out. Well. Maybe some of you do. Just remember to pace yourself and drink lots of water. And don’t sit on boys’ laps!

Enjoy it while both eyes are focused, darlings!

Okay I’m having a hard time seeing the hip hop influence in this, but I love the color & those tights are to die for. Favorites are the Emilio Cavallini tights and Roger Vivier shoes in the 2nd pic and the Emilio Cavallini tights, and Prada shoes in the 7th.

I don’t believe it’s suppose to be hip hop influenced.

I think the title of the editorial is hip “pop” as in pop art. Think Andy Warhol or Peter Max.

Too late. I’m already out; I’m already buzzed…and I’m already sitting on a gentleman’s lap.

..but we both thing the editorial is interesting.

frigging gorgeous… sure, there’s a lot going on, but it all works beautifully together and never comes off crowded (like that jewelry foliage editorial did). each piece is distinct and has its own voice, carrying its own weight in each outfit, but most of the outfits are greater than the sum of their parts. daring AND successful, for a change.

I think I got drunk LOOKING at this editorial. Well, I got the spins, anyway… Gorgeous color and pattern here, but a little too much all at once to really take in.

perhaps gaga could make the particular & lovely social contribution that outfits such as the abovenoted will become workwear even, in their downmarket issue, for the proles.

that would be nice &, as a personal bonus, her taking sans transformation so many other people’s ideas would annoy me far less.

Funny you mention throwing up, because it looks like someone threw up clothes all over these girls.  I get what they’re going for here, but there are so many layers- gloves and hats and bags and coats and more coats.  It’s a little much.

Ok, I know it has been months and months and we have all moved on but……. It’s editorials and fashion like this that makes Nina and Michael look especially crazy argueing that Gretchen was more “on trend” than Mondo.  We have seen this over and over, Mondo had his finger squarely on the pulse of the coming year.

Very very fun, if a bit hard to see the clothes. Yowza! If I’d even had 1/2 a cocktail my head might be spinning out of control. Now it’s time for a Gin and Tonic. Happy weekend everyone.

It looks as if W had a mandate to do an editorial with everything that had color lying about. Took me a while to settle down from all the noise in the spread and start picking out things I liked. All of the tights are cool, and I adore those peppermint Prada shoes in #7, the coat in #9 with those Chanel boots, are really, really sweet.

Maybe I’m a popart hag, but I love this editorial. I love the hats, especially the third picture with the Philip Treacy hat (really I love all the hats here), and I LOVE the fact that this editorial was made so much better with a good model such as Eliza Cummings. They both really make these clothes sing.

Huh.  That’s… loud.  Not necessarily unattractive (except for the one where she’s lounging in two conflicting stripes with a plaid thing over her chest–that’s bad), but loud.  She seems to have exactly the same expression in each one, like a really angry Barbie doll who a crazed child keeps re-dressing.

I love the total overload! The colors, styling, and setting all meld into psychedelic images. Yes, identifying each piece reminds me of ‘I Spy’ kids’ books, and none of these combinations will ever be wearable, but it’s still beautiful to take in as an image.
