Lorenzo’s girlcrush Florence Welch tries on clothes for Nylon magazine and confirms that she’s the whitest girl in show biz.

On Her Emotional Connection to Music:
It’s funny because I’m not actually very good at saying how I feel in person. I think songwriting is a way for me to deal with my own emotional failings in life. When I’m making a song, it’s almost as if I can express how I feel. It’s almost as if, to get a message across to one person, you have to sing it to a couple of thousand.

On her first European tour, with MGMT:
We were desperate to do it, but obviously had no money. But my dad said he’d take us around in his camper van… so [the band] and my dad chugged around Europe for a month. We’d get to these tiny European towns and just look for the biggest thing there, which was always MGMT’s tour bus. That’s how we found the venue. They must have thought we were insane, turning up with pots and pans rattling, hanging out the window like “Hellooo.”

On childhood aspirations:
I wanted to be a witch when i was a kid. I was obsessed with witchcraft. At school, me and my friends had these spell books: I always wanted a more magical reality. I had a shrine at home and I did a spell to try and make the boy in the other class fall in love with me.”

Awkward, shy and witchy. That sounds about how we figured. She sounds sweet and unaffected, though. As for the pictures, they styled her in some loopy, mismatched manic pixie dream girl ensembles, but it all mostly works with her. Maybe because she can barely crack a smile in most of them. Dress up someone like Taylor Swift in this stuff and she’d look ridiculous but Flo’s naturally mournful face makes a nice contrast. Like she’s in on it.

But man, is she white.

Haha, I actually got my NYLON in the mail today, and saw Florence on the cover and was actually going to tell you guys because you don’t usually do NYLON here. But I guess you beat me to the punch.

I’m having trouble coming to grips with living in a world where someone would willingly put on those houndstooth short shorts. Good God.

      • Sabrina Sorich

it’s not the houndstooth that bothers me, but the fact that I’m not even sure if I can label them as shorts, just really awkward underwear.

      T&Lo said…
      “But man, is she white.”

Of course I would never make such a statement.

But I would advise Ms. Welch to stay far away from evil queens bearing apples.

I love the way she looks in basically all of these. Of course I’m a bit biased because I’m in love with her music. As for her childhood aspirations…that was totally me in middle school.

I’m roughly that pale and it’s fantastic to see such a cool chick rocking the paleness!  Love her

I’m with you on that!!!  I’m that pale too, with almost black hair, so I love that’s she’s rocking it too!!

Ditto. Thank God she’s not orange!

Now I get the long-sleeve-floor-length dresses, she’s miserably pale. I second Lo’s girlcrush, but like her personal style better.

Not a huge fan of these photos.  Why take someone who is already pale and wash them out further?

      • http://twitter.com/Megan_Burgess Megan

Agreed. I would definitely have chosen a different color background. All the bright white kind of hurts my eyes.

Yes, thank you.  Those are excellent…

      WOW! Girlfriend IS white!

    • Anonymous

I don’t doubt she’s pretty pale, but it looks like her body has been heavily overexposed in post to make the clothes pop more.

      • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Yeah, that’s what I see, they obviously turned the contrast way up so her hair and the clothes would pop. Her skin has an almost blueish cast to it, that I don’t think you would see in real life.

        • Anonymous

Yep, that’s what I see as well.

          • Anonymous

in agreement.  as a white white whitey redhead myself, those colors are not exactly real.

        • http://profiles.google.com/alison.sigman Alison Sigman

I agree, it’s like they photoshopped her skin color to make it look devoid of all coloring. Except you can still see traces of it around the elbows & knees in most shots.

        • Anonymous

Agreed.  It reminds me of myself when I ride roller coasters, and then you get to see the picture afterward, you know?  Being a pale red head, I always look like a ghost amongst the living.

Kinda bluish white in some of the shots.
She does have a great  sense of style. I like looking at her and I can’t wait to see what she is going to wea next.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

LOVE the pink wedgies in the first photo.

    • Lisa

She’s fun!  I like how she has her own sense of style, but it still works!

    • Anonymous

Good lord, I thought she was wearing white tights! Pretty only on redheads and some brunettes…

    • Susan Foster

I’m not feeling the pictures.  They dressed her too young.

    • Anonymous

Better white than orange, for sure! Thanks for cleansing our visual palates after the horror that was SuriMommy.

      • Shannon Merryman

I agree! I’m a very pale redhead as well, and people at my overly orange/brown (all fake n’ bake and tanning oil) don’t seem to understand that I love my skin as it is.

        • Anonymous

Yes! Let’s hear it for all the pale redheads. It’s taken me 40-something years to become okay with my extremely fair skin. However,  I still wouldn’t want to be photographed on a stark white set.

          • Anonymous

I am a redhead and I LOVE my pale skin.  Okay, when I’m cold it’s like see-thru blue, but that’s the only time I don’t like it!!

    • up with pod people

She looks lovely and ethereal, but the white-on-white is brutal. And she would be so much better suited to dryad/naiad/druidic themes than this overcooked harajuku BS.

    • MilaXX

I’m all for embracing your natural skin tone. In fact I prefer that over fake tans any day, but geez, couldn’t they give her a colored backdrop? She all but disappears in half these shots.

    • Anonymous

I know that Nylon is a very youth-oriented magazine, but these clothes look too young for her. Cute, but still too young.

      • Saoirse Lee

She’s only 24 though, it’s hardly mutton dressed up as lamb.

My those are some ugly clothes!

    • elizabeth todd

      Love, Love, Love, LOVE her!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Ok, I love her music and I get that she is a unique beauty but you guys have gone overboard with the fancrush.  These photos are dull at best.  She is no model and if it were anyone else you would have pointed that out ASAP.  Biased indeed.  :)

wow that i sa lot of photo editting

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      Adorable.

    • Anonymous

Agree with the too young comments. Most of these fit in with the fashion-conscious middle school girls’ choices around here. (Though I will say I haven’t yet seen a middle schooler in such statement heels).

    • Margot Brose

I think it’s unfair for you to state she’s white like it’s a bad thing (not as a race issue, but as a health issue.) It was a bad call on the photographer’s part to shoot her against a white background when she has the classic redhead complexion, but simultaneously, I think she should be proud of her natural skin tone and not trying to can-tan or cancer-ray her way into what some people believe to be ‘beautiful’ skin. It’s a bad message to all the people who admire her. Let her snow-white skin be, bitches!

      • Anonymous

Oh for God’s sake, they didn’t say it was a “bad thing.” The chick is preternaturally pale. It’s notable. They noted it. Get over it.

    • Anonymous

Oh yay! Someone paler than me!  It was the first warm day here in the Northeast and I bravely wore my skirts but I look like an anatomy textbook. Florence – though photo shopped (no on is that pale and showing no veins or arteries) looks lovely and ethereal.

And I would like to borrow that red skirt.

    • Anonymous

The clothing and the photos don’t do much for me at all, but I love the interview excerpts. She seems to be very charming. And her dad driving her band around in the camper van? Adorable!

Really wish they would have put her on an actual set so I could see her!!!

    • http://twitter.com/laylagalise laylagalise

They should have used a colored background so she wouldn’t look so Casper.

i’m willing to bet this is the first time she’s shown her legs in public in a few years.

    • Anonymous

Mighty tween-y stuff for Miss Florence … these photos make no sense at all.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_66HFFWC5H34DVBXUAHXZW3QQIU Monodecaca

      Shitty poses

    • Jo Miller

From the way she is tilting her head, Florence strongly reminds me of Glenne Headly in several of these shots.

    • Anonymous

      I love these! I’m a necrophiliac.

    • Anonymous

dislike the denim jacket ensemble. otherwise its cute enough, though it feels more like artschool hipster chick than high fashion editorial to me.

    • Anonymous

I have a child with that coloring.  We refer to it as ‘translucent’.

    • Anonymous

Wow…I think this is the first time I’ve seen her actually look her age. I was absolutely floored when I found out she was barely two years older than I am (I’m 22), since she always seems to dress and just look much older. I think she looks great here! I also am thinking she isn’t THAT white, just in combination with the stark white floors + backdrop, it really intensifies it and the clothes she’s wearing as well.

    • Judy_J

She looks cute here, and closer to her actual age.  I have a feeling that her skin isn’t as white as it appears here, though.  I suspect Photoshopping was done to enhance her fair skin.

    • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

My 16-yr old daughter is a huge fan of Florence, and has long legs like her, so I can see her loving this Nylon shoot. When she puts on short skirts or shorts, I gulp, bite my tongue, and remember that I was wearing platform shoes and mini-dresses with matching underwear to high school in 1974. Thank goodness my kid prefers cowboy boots, or she’d be on crutches!

    • aimee_parrott

They needed to put her against a non-white background.  She looks limbless in some of these.

      Love her, though.

    • Anonymous

The color of her skin has been desaturated, while the clothes, hair, etc. has been saturated.  Digital processing techniques.

    • Anonymous

As a girl who glows in the dark, I appreciate the white girl!

    • joelk75

Oh my God, I think she actually smiled in at least one picture!

    • Anonymous

Man, I thought I was pasty white. Turns out I am pretty damn tan.
