In or Out: Emma Watson in Azzaro

Posted on May 12, 2011

Minions, Emma Watson attended the launch of her Lancôme Trésor Midnight Rose perfume in Paris in an Azzaro dress. It behooves you to form and express opinions about it immediately. Let’s get to work.

Azzaro Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Maud Barrandon (WM)

Well, as far as we’re concerned, this is the very definition of a “good on paper” dress. It should work, especially for someone like Emma, but it just doesn’t. Basically, it’s a dress for size zeroes to pose in; it’s not a dress for standing and walking and sitting, like those awful “normal” people do. Granted, Emma’s no more “normal” than the average model, but she has a job to do and it’s more than just striking a pose.  Also, we think the balance is all off here; too fussy on the bottom and too plain on top. And finally, on the bottom, the shoes are generic and on the top the hair is… well, let’s just say we don’t like it. We realize pixie cuts are a pain in the ass to grow out, but this flat, uneven, 14-year-old boy cut isn’t fabulous.

VOTE NOW!

IN! She looks chic and sassy, you whiny bitches!
OUT! She looks like a boy in a dress!

The Minion Opinion on Christina Ricci’s secretarial drag was decidedly mixed, but we think the consensus was IN.

Aw I think she is “IN” … she looks young and cute though I’d prefer a sassier shoe; and as someone who recently grew out a Pixie Cut I have to give her credit for not just copping out and using extensions!

In!! It just seems to fit her in Paris and she looks great! I would just add some earrings though.

The neckline is far more open on her version. And I think that with her hair, she would have been better off with the more closed crew neck.

Her version would have worked better with more full hair

I am pained, cause I think she rocks, but when she chooses a dress that makes her look chunky and plain, it’s an OUT.

    • Carrie Bradshaw

Chunky on the planet Ana, maybe, but in real life, she looks like the god damn waif that she is.

  • minnye

The dress could be killer without the dumb velvet bow and with a belt, maybe something punkish? (to go with the hair – which I rather like). And better shoes for SURE.

Within the binary system, however, I’m going with OUT.

Out. She looks strange. With that haircut especially, I think she should go for sleek and slim, not froo-froo.

  • Lulu

First of all, I think she’s adorable. Such a pretty girl with such a cute style.

The dress needs a little editing. Remove all that foofaraw from the sleeves and make them just solid black, either long sleeves or tiny cap sleeves, and get rid of that ridiculous bow on her waist. Then we’d be cooking with oil. Also, she needs some chunky earrings and cuter shoes.

I would have liked this dress much more without the sleeve ruffles. Ruffle overload! The bottom is plenty… Flat hair… personality-less shoes … no earrings. Sorry Emma, OUT.

  • http://profiles.google.com/paigemano Paige Mano

Too short? And yeah, better shoes.

  • Cheri

Oh, I wanted to like this, but it just seems Off. You may have hit the reason with “Only for size zero posing.” The sleeves are longer on her than on the model, and that makes it a little more bottom heavy than it should be. Shorten the black portion of the sleeves by two inches and see the difference. Then make the black part a fabric with texture, maybe, or a more charcoal shade, so it’s not just a lost space. The problem is, she could do all that and the dress might work, but she still wore it with those shoes, and that hair. Did the power go out in her hotel and she had to air dry? Sadly, and OUT.

  • Anonymous

Agree about how the more closed neckline would have suited her look better; also agree about the shoes–the heel needs to be higher. She’d also benefit from some earrings to pull more attention to her face, and away from the layers of the skirt. She’s IN, but needs tweaking.

it looks awful. the model looks much better, and i think it’s all because the sleeve length is totally wrong on Emma. the sleeves are way too long and flamenco costume-y. if they were shorter like they are on the model it’d be better.

aw…so close. If she lost the arm ruffles and added just one more ruffle layer to the hem length this would be forgivable (even with the growing-it-out-phase hair)…but it’s not. So it OUT, unfortch :(

I’m torn. She is very cute, the dress has a lot going for it but……. The ruffles on the skirt AND the ruffles on the sleeves all seem to be too much And then we throw on a velvet bow? It borders on figure skater costume. Sexier shoes would have heped, lose the bow and it might have been fantastic.

Definitely out… you’re right (of course) – the bottom is too fussy. I can’t stop looking at it… and not in a good way!

In. But a somewhat tortured In. She is young and cute and fresh and….. well, you get the idea. I think she is one of the lucky few who can really pull of the pixie hair and I have no complaints about her make-up and hair. It’s the shoes. If she had just worn different shoes, (and as someone else mentioned, a different belt) the outfit would rock on her I think. As it is, she gets an in bkz she is young and cute and fresh and as such, can get away with the ruffles and flounces and still be called cute. Unlike those of us “of a certain age.”

Maybe the ruffles are too big, but I give her an IN.

  • Kimmeister

I think she’s IN. Still young enough to pull off such a precious look. Granted, she doesn’t look as good as the model, as the dress benefits from a taller, leggier wearer, but she still looks pretty good. I actually can’t tell if she’s wearing flats or heels, I hope they were heels.

The second I saw the picture I thought, “That is not a real world dress” and then lo, I scrolled down, and there you were, talking about how it wasn’t a real world dress! I think she’s gorgeous, but the dress does not quite work.

Also the HAIR. Yes, growing out a pixie cut is a bitch. But you should never STRAIGHTEN IT like that! The key to making it look like GIRL hair still is so keep it messy and sort of tossed around. Not to have little wispy bits sticking out from your ears.

Sadly, I say out, though my affection for Hermione is undying.

  • stellavision

I think she’s adorable — well, except for the hair, which is definitely in the awkward growing-out phase. In.

I am sooo pained, cause I want to call you two whiny bitches, and say that she looks chic and and sassy. BUT, you are sooo right, in that this idea is GREAT in CONCEPT, but in the reality of an evening situation, it just is NOT werking for her …, As Kayarain said, the dress is wearing her and she looks like a boy in a dress … a cute boy in a dress, but nonetheless …

So, I am painfully on the fence again, but leaning toward OUT this time, but you two daddiess keep throwing some fashion hardballs to us bitter kitten minions … and I luv Emma but hate to throw the baby boy out with the dirty dish water, just to mix my metaphors …

    Just sayin and complainin-

Out – it makes her look short and stumpy and a little chubby, which she is none of the above. Maybe better shoes would have helped, but I don’t think so.

  • Anonny

Why does it look so poofy on her? Out.

  • Grace Poole

She usually has such great fashion insticts and almost always looks terrific but this just misses. You’re right – great in theory but the reality doesn’t quite work. I can’t give her an out for it, though. She just gets a meh.

  • SmartAss

OK, I am demanding my right to change my mind. I’m giving her a painful IN … rather than a painful out. Emma has great fashion sense … she even looked cute at Coachella, which is a hard thing to pull off. The pixie cut was cute and a great way to reinvent herself, but she is stuck in a painful growing out phase, which isnt her fault. And the concept of the dress was great, it just doesn’t look as good as it should, but she has always been young, fresh and is on my A list, so I’m taking back my out and giving it an IN, although I refuse to call you two whiny bitches, because I am being a whiny bitch myself this morning.

I agree with ask who thought the original crew neck would have looked better. I also think she should have had the sleeve taken to the 3/4 length that the model shows. She also needs a kickier shoe. Basically, for this too look, she needed to obsess over the details and she didn’t. It could have been fun and perfectly Paris-ish, but as it is, it’s just this side of OUT.

She looks a little too cute, and the fit and proportions are a little off, but IN anyway. I wish the line between black and white on the sleeves and bodice didn’t line up horizontally — the dress would be more flattering. (I had the 1966 version of this dress, in exuberant 60s colors and patterns. This might be an improvement.)

  • Anonymous

Maybe on Elle Fanning. Otherwise, FAIL!

  • aimee_parrott

It pains me to do it, but she’s OUT. The sleeves are just too long, I really think that’s the main problem with the dress. Her shoes could have been snappier, for sure, but I could give those a pass if not for the sleeves. Ditto the hair, which is not good, but I would give her a bit of a pass on growing out the pixie.

Oh Lordy. I LOVE Emma Watson but this is an Out. Love her hair though. The dress just doesn’t seem to work for her proportions, she’s looking short and stunted in it. Like she’s crouching down to avoid flashing too much of the good china. Out.

I do have to say the dress would look better without the ruffles on the bottoms of the sleeves, but I also adore Emma to pieces and think she looks chic and adorable. Besides, if there’s anywhere you can wear ruffled sleeves and make it look chic, it’s Pairs, non? And I resoundingly agree with @0cbb9b86aea948a2b40f787062577ad1:disqus : I recently grew out a pixie cut, and it was a bitch. There is simply no good cut to do it with. Is there a way to make voting clickable on the page in question in a way that would display results after a user registers his/her vote?

I like it a lot on her, really. ‘Ask’ nailed it, that she should’ve opted for a crew-neck version (this makes her look awfully pin-headed and broad-shouldered), but I like the ‘Swingin’ 60′s’ feel of the dress, both graphic and sweet. She’s got a great face for 60′s-style looks, especially with her cropped hair… which reminds me: Emma Watson, you need a trim around the edges. A half-inch shorter around the neckline, and MUCH shorter ‘sideburns’ would make her hair look 10x better while she grows it out.

A little rough in the details, but an overall great impression. IN.

I’d give it a qualified “in” because I don’t think it looks bad, really, but it could have been a lot better. The hair is a bit flat, although it doesn’t look bad, and I’d much rather see plain-but-okay shoes than crazy-and-ugly. My big problem is just that it’s so plain – could really have used a colorful necklace or earrings or something, just a bit of color &/or sparkle.

  • Momzilla

Think how much nicer that dress would be with plain, close-fitting sleeves with just a white embellishment at the cuff. And the original neckline was important to the look. The batteau neckline is not working.
There’s a line between “pixie cut” and “snatched bald,” and Emma has crossed it. Especially the comb-over plastered to her forehead.
    I usually love the girl

I have to go with OUT. I think the dress could work if they lost two of the ruffles on each sleeve and maybe added one at the neck. Given that I’m sporting a pixie myself, I will refrain from commenting on the hair.

OUT. When I first saw the dress, I thought it was very chic-looking–very suitable for a Paris perfume launch. But it’s so wrong and unflattering on her. And I agree that the pixie cut does her no favors. She’s not working the dress either–she looks uncomfortable in it….and rightly so!

I am really bothered by the sleeves of the dress! On the model in the picture they aren’t as disturbing because they are half hidden but they make Emma look wide in the middle. So I totally agree that it is a “good on paper” dress and not for moving when moving means to not keep your arms pressed to your sides.

Just right on the model. On Emma, though, the bell sleeves should have been mitigated as bit, length-wise and/or width-wise. Also, it seems to work better on taller people; height seems to restore any balance sacrificed by the whole look. This should be an IN relative to the last IN/OUT, so since last one was an IN, does that mean this one is IN, too? In spite of the quibbles, I think this one is an IN. I can imagine her getting sincere complements on it in person.

I think she could benefit from a more closed neckline; but, man, there’s nothing to be done that could cause me to give her an in, other than for her to change clothes. I HATE the dress. No one over the age of 10 should wear it. If you’re old enough for it it fit you, you’re too old to wear it.

She, however, is so cute. The hair is fine. Having grown out more than a couple pixies, I know what a pain in the ass it is. She gets a pass.

Still love the pixie cut, but the dress is out. It’s kind of flamenco, but you’re right – it’s only going to look good on someone who has zero curves and is straight up and down. She’s got a gorgeous figure, but this doesn’t work for her.

  • http://twitter.com/mariacarson Maria Carson

I looked at the model and thought “oh, that looks kind of cool” and I looked at Emma and immediately cringed. I think you’re correct – if you have to even move like a normal person in this outfit, the ruffles move and it loses its shape and it just goes to hell. Out, and I adore Emma Watson.

I am kind of on the fence. I don’t hate it. I think the dress could be vastly improved by less sleeve. She is looking a little “sad french clown” for me. I do think she is doing well on the growing out the hair front though…. I’ll say in.

  • formerlyAnon

IN. I think it’s cute and fun without being either juvenile or candy-colored. It could have used something to relieve the unrelieved black top, though I can’t think what would have done it without ruining what I like about it – I think it’s a witty up-aging (you know what I mean even though it’s not a word) of a young girl’s party frock. But I figure doing fixes like that are for stylists in conjunction with the design house to figure out.

OUT, without a doubt. The dress obviously looks great on the model, but on her its flooffy and draggy, not in a good way.

Out. The higher neckline on the model pulled the eye up to the face and balanced it out.

OUT. Hair is boyish indeed, what’s so hard to grow a pixie cut, you trim the back of the head constantly and blowdry the rest. The dress is only good as a fashion drawing. OUT.

I think IN too.  The dress is weird but cute…weirdly cute? And her hair sucks, but there’s not a lot she can do about it.

Aww, Emma, you’re rich! Buy a wig if your hair sucks! Even though there’s a lot of ways to make that length cute *rocking that length right now*
Oh, I think the outfit’s terrible. Reminds me of Uli’s black and white weird short dress on PR3 with the ugly necklace. Out.

Yeah, that dress is hiddy! Not much better on the model. I could see it on my 8 year old grand daughter (if I had one), maybe. Now the hair–that last pic (head shot) actually is pretty cute–for a grow out. And I  do like her hair shorter than the long tresses she had to wear all those years as Hermione–brings out the beauty of her face.

That boyish haircut is probably the best her despairing hair stylist could do. I’ve been there. Lord, have I been there. Short of forcing extensions into her hair, there wasn’t much else to do while still retaining length. So I’m prepared to just have a nostalgic little sigh about the last time I grew out a pixie cut and let bygones be bygones.

But those sleeves! Oh, sweet Jesus. She looks like she’s about to lead a mambo. It’s enough to make me say OUT.

Are you kidding!  She is the perfect person to wear the dress.  Now if Cameron or someone older tried to wear it, it wouldn’t work.  But it’s fun & chic for a 20-something starlet.  She looks adorable.  It’s an IN!

Is she short?  Because the proportions are what kill it on her.  If the dress had a higher neckline, shorter sleeves, and a little less volume on the ruffles this would be an IN.  Also, there’s something about where the dress hits here waist that is strange.

That is an awful lot of dress for her early-`70s tween hair. I keep screwing up my eyes then looking at the photos again, thinking that’ll somehow make her look cute and not silly, but it’s not working. But I don’t want the poor girl to starve herself into a size upon which this dress would not look silly. Still, oh, no, no, no. It’s not working, and I’m giving myself a headache.

Oh, Hermione, dear. I’m sorry, but you are OUT.

that’s exactly what I was thinking.  The neckline worked better on the model than the boatneck that Emma’s sporting

  • Louise Bryan

She definitely does not look like a boy in a dress.  Guys don’t have such nice legs, or such beautiful eyes.

The dress is kind of over the top, but I’m not a fan of ruffles.  Childhood trauma, don’t ask.

Still, I think she would have to be wearing a paper bag for me to give her a thumb down.  After all, she could be my daughter, if she had thicker hair.
