Cannes Watch: Closing Ceremony

Posted on May 24, 2011

Darlings, it was the closing ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival and some of the ladies BROUGHT IT.

Kirsten Dunst in Chanel

Chanel Spring 2010 Couture Collection/Model: Sigrid Agren (ELITE)

Kiki is back in the hizzy, you guys. This is the best she’s looked in ages. Oh sure, you all voted her an IN when we were leaning toward OUT (and we forgive you for that), but you have to admit, she’s bringing movie star realness to the red carpet here. Her hair still looks like an afterthought and she’s got the bitchiest facial expression on her, but the girl looks fantastic.

Jane Fonda in Emilio Pucci

It’s a stunning dress and it’s on a stunningly well-preserved gal, but after the applause for her surgeon and support garments fades, we’re left thinking the combination of tight and slinky with a perfectly matched skin tone makes her look a bit like she’s melting.Still, we did the gasp when we saw her and that was surely the whole point.

Rosario Dawson in Roberto Cavalli

Rosario’s always been a fence-jumper* for us and we usually like the effort and thought that gets put into her outfits, but we’re not sure we love this look. There’s just too much going on. Dramatic, yes. But also a little distracting. There’s one too many elements here at least. Plus the super-matchy earrings disappoint us and the fit in the bust looks a little off.

*someone who is not in your gender preference wheelhouse for whom you would “jump the fence”

Uma Thurman in Armani Privé

Holy shit, she looks amazing. In fact, we’ve just coined a fashion term. Just like every lady should have a Little Black Dress in her closet, so should she have a Holy Shit She Looks Amazing Dress hanging next to it. This is your Holy Grail, ladies. Just like every guy should find the cut of jeans that makes his ass look magnificent (and every guy can), every lady must have her Holy Shit She Looks Amazing dress. If she’s dress-inclined, that is. We suppose you could find a Holy Shit She Looks Amazing Pair of Pants but that doesn’t have the same ring to it.

We seem to have wandered off a bit.

Anyway, yes. She looks amazing. It’s dramatic and beautiful and – this is not a word we use often but we should – womanly. There’s nothing girly or flirty about this look. It’s all woman. We weren’t sure about the heavy-rimmed eyes, but it really sets off the blue in them, which is, of course, the point when paired with this dress. We like that the jewelry is extremely understated. It should be, with such a dramatic dress. We don’t love the hair. An updo was required, but that sad little topknot isn’t wowing us.

Still. Holy shit, she looks amazing.

Sorry, you guys are on crack with the Kirsten judgment.  Her skirt looks like a jellyfish that’s being slowly torn apart – while still alive.  All the stuff going on around the hem makes me want to scream.  As for Rosario, I think she looks stunning.  You guys get way too hung up on the matchy-matchy thing.  They’re just earnings!  You’re dead-on about Uma, though.  Gorgeous!

    • http://twitter.com/nicole_sauvage Nicole Sauvage

TLo, thank you so much. I’ve been looking for “fence-jumper” for 2 weeks.  I knew there had to be a word to express that idea!

    • Anonymous

Yowza, Uma does look just gorgeous. I think Kirsten does look dramatic, but I’m not crazy about that mummy-looking stuff at the bottom of her skirt or that weird silver thingamabob in the middle of the dress. The bodice is gorgeous, though.

    • Anonymous

Couldn’t disagree more on Uma. The neck line and what appears to be pretty hideous fabric makes it looks like somone shrunk a Snuggie and wrapped her up in it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I’ll give Uma a pass on the hair because I’ve never seen it look much bigger — she just has very thin hair, and she seems to not want to use hairpieces to make it look fuller.  But that dress could not be more perfect for her.  If I found a gown that made me look that incredible, I would never wear anything else.  I’d do my grocery shopping in full formalwear if necessary!

What’s up with the pubic foil on Kirsten’s dress?

      • http://twitter.com/Jillio Jillio

Agreed! On the model’s presumably longer torso the decoration doesn’t look nearly as obscene. At first glance I thought she was vajazzling for the big event.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=68202265 Andrea Howland-Myers

Boys, that’s not where the vajayjay lives. that’s more like her belly button.

      • Anonymous

She’s taking it home to have for lunch tomorrow.

    • Anonymous

Kirsten, Rosario and Uma look stunning. I don’t like Jane Fonda’s hairdo.

    • Annie Leung

I gasped when I saw Uma, clearly the best of all. Kirsten is ok, I go back and forth with the shoes but when I think that the alternative would have been some shade of nude, I’ll live with the black. I should like Rosario’s look but something’s off about it, then again, that’s how I always feel about Cavalli. I wish Jane’s dress was a different color! If it had been in a green or violet, I think she would have looked amazing. But right now, all I see is Uma, she cannot be unseen.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Finally, a Chanel dress at Cannes that doesn’t suck. I still wish it didn’t have the big silver crotch star, but other than that and her sloppy hair (get it together, Dunst!), it’s a WIN. I disagree with you guys on the blue Cavalli–I’m just happy to see Rosario Dawson looking good again. Minor adjustments: pink lip, spangly silver earrings, and some boobage adjustment. Uma Thurman at Cannes has been NAILING it, totally redeeming herself from the years of bad boho-hippy/sloppy showings on the RC. She looks amaaazing.

    • Anonymous

The absolutely best thing about the Uma dress is in a lot of photos you can clearly see the edge of her Spanx.  While it may detract a bit from the clean lines, I think it’s awesome that she wears them.  I mean, if Uma needs them, well…. just saying.

    • Patricia Biswanger

Jennifer Lopez needs to consult with Uma Thurman about how to select a dress that is tight, but not too tight.

      • Anonymous

Or more precisely, how to select the correct under garment.

        • Anonymous

          ExACTly.

        • jabes

Seriously.  That is some kind of rock-solid foundation wear she has on. There isn’t a line or an edge showing anywhere.  I’m not sure how that’s even physically possible!

Except for that piece of silver in the middle, Kirsten looks fantastic.  That shoulder part of Rosario’s dress does not work in the front, it’s not flattering in the bust area, but the back of the dress is wonderful. That strap really works in the back.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Kiki’s shoes are ridiculous, but I love the dress.  All the ladies look amazing.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_X7AMHZR3CDUFGMPMEPCYUNSHUM Claire

Kirsten Dunst is having a great week, winning the Prix d’Interprétation Féminine at Cannes on Sunday and then winning a “best she looked in ages” from T-Lo ! I tend to disagree on both counts though, but let’s not spoil the girl’s efforts. Well done.

    • mcarlson

I love the term “womanly”. Too often on the red carpet we see “slutty” “trashy” “campy” “cracky”…I could go on. You get my drift. How lovely to see someone look “womanly”. Uma looks stunning in that dress. I love its simplicity, modesty (and yet, it’s all “I am FIERCE”) and color.

    • Toni Mitt

Wow–all four of these women Brought It.  They are all stunning in the their own way.  Seeing Uma (one of my personal heroes) almost made me swoon–so beautiful.  It is fab to see movies stars looking like…movie stars!

    • Judy_J

Uma Thurman is stunning in that dress.  The dress is stunning with Uma Thurman in it. HSSLA!  Jane Fonda looks great, too.  I wish the dress had a bit more color, but the fit is fabulous, and she’s working the shit out of it.  I wish the bottom part of Rosario Dawson’s dress had been left off.  It would have looked much better without that yardage hanging out below the knee.

    • Anonymous

Uma for the win!  I had scroll-down stun, she looks so fabulous.

And J-Lo?  That’s how you wear a body conscious dress, I don’t care what the occasion is.

    • up with pod people

Rosario’s also a “fence jumper” for me, and despite the awkwardness in the bust, I like her marine blue venture much better than Uma’s. In fact I’m still sort of blinking at your analysis of its success. She’s got a stunning body and she’s beautiful but I think that’s in spite of the dress, not because of it.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

They all look great. Not feeling KiKi shoes or Uma make up, but minor points.

      Loving the term “fence jumping.”

    • Anonymous

Wow, Jane’s and Uma’s dresses are unforgiving, eh? They both look inCREDible in them. Uma’s face looks different to me, but I can’t put my finger on it — maybe it’s the eye makeup. That color is stunning on her. Jane’s I wish was some other color, not black, not white, don’t know what would look best on her, but I don’t like that peachy color.

    • Anonymous

Actually I think Rosario Dawson’s dress is  also of a “Holy Shit She Looks Amazing” caliber. There’s something that is transporting about the patterning.

    • Diana Martinez

Maybe with different hair, I would have thought Uma looked good, but as is, I gave her an “eh.”   Kirsten looks ok, but I can’t get past how much I hate those shoes with that outfit.  Why didn’t she go with something lighter?

    • http://profiles.google.com/kbryna kbryna frogboots

Love how “wheelhouse,” previously referencing one’s design aesthetic, look, etc, also now encompasses who one wants to have sex with. Most excellent. “Wheelhouse” is rapidly becoming one of my favorite phrases.  Uma does look good, but the closeups of the dress (esp the neckline/back) remind me too much of a figure-skating costume. I wish “nude” as a “color” for both clothes and shoes would be outlawed.  And Kirsten Dunst gets lots of props from me for making it through this week looking as good as she has – after having to sit though Lars von Trier’s batshit nazi episode, this girl has a pass for me for a long time. Don’t love the dress but she IS bringing it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

Maybe Kirsten is feeling bitchy because she hasn’t gotten over that whole fiasco with Melancholia.

You’re right about the bust fit on Rosario’s dress, but I think in general it’s absolutely stunning.  Really visually interesting.

Uma’s dress is one that looks great from afar, but that image up close sort of killed it for me.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

Rosario for the win. That dress is amazing and she looks gorgeous in it. The strap in the front could lay a little better, but in sum, it’s phenomenal. I feel for Uma and her hair – I also have thin hair and while in my mind I can do Duchess of Cambridge hair, in reality it looks more like that.

    • Anonymous

What’s with the wad of foil clinging to Kiki’s lady parts? Hastily eaten breakfast burrito wrapping or cheap codpiece?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=37300827 Johnny Heffernan

WOW to Uma. Just stunning. Brava, darling.

I loved your comment that Kirsten’s “bringing movie star realness to the red carpet here”.

    • Anonymous

Had the exact opposite reactions to Rosario and Uma. Thought Rosario found her Holy Shit dress (even liked the uber-red lips with it, which I normally detest).
Uma’s dress looks like somebody bought too much spandex for their next production run of yoga tops and needed a quick evening look. Great colour but pretty basic in the design and fabric selection.

    • Anonymous

It’s nice to see movie stars looking like, well, movie stars again. They all look so glamorous and elegant. My personal faves are Kiki and Uma. My only gripe with Kiki’s Chanel is the crumpled tin foil over the good china — it’s almost never, ever a good idea.

    • Anonymous

Are you sure this should be a “Holy Shit She Looks Amazing Dress” for Uma?  I think you might just be distracted by the faint smile she was finally bothered to give the cameras.

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

Kudos to Uma – she looks phenomenal!!!

    • Anonymous

For the over the shoulder look I’d put Rosario s’lightly higher than Uma.  I wasn’t sure about her hair and makeup but I love her long pony tail as well ( the only thing I wish was that it was less patchwork-y).

Uma’s hair is beyond sad.   The human part is the two little rolls on her side in that second pic.  But overall great look

    • Anonymous

Oh my did you see ALL  of the Black on everyone and I mean EVERY ONE in the background?       Not Fond Of Fonda – so meh.

Kirsten – there is something about her that I don’t usually like and it might be her expressions – but for behind she looks really good her.

    • Anonymous

Rosario looks great until you scroll past her knees.

    • Anonymous

I don’t like Dunst’s gown, I just don’t get Chanel. I think most of their clothes are incredibly ugly. Love the suits, but that’s it.

What is the difference between Uma and JLo – both about the same age, I think, and both in great shape. One is elegant, the other is tacky. It is all in the fit, I think.

I have NEVER seen a Roberto Cavalli dress that I like.  They are all horrible and tacky.

I’ve had the exact opposite feelings on Dunst’s dress twice now. While I thought the yellow one was perfect, all I can think with this one is “I am a star, and my vagina must be worshipped. Bow down to the most fabulous pussy you wish you could see!”

Completely agree with you on Uma, though. Her body is magnificent in that dress!

I was going to say exactly what TaurusKW did. You all are on crack in regards to Kirsten Dunst. This outfit is terrible, her last outfit was flawless.

Uma’s eyeliner is too magic marker.  Hair IS sad.  Otherwise, she looks magnificent.   I think she has the most beautiful nose in the world.

    • Lisa

Good lord, my girl Uma got herself some gays judging by her past few outings!  She’s been looking fabulous lately!

And really, I do love Rosario’s look – I think you guys may have been a little tough on her! ;-)

Dunst… I’m torn.  I think if the skirt flowed outward a little rather than tapering inward at the bottom, and if it didn’t have that weird crotch-flake, it could have been wonderful.  But she was close.

    • http://twitter.com/Naddy_Lite Nadege

Everyone looks fabulous in my opinion!

    • MilaXX

I think Kiki looks lovely and I even like the hair.
Jane’s dress is nice, but I would have preferred a color. Red would have been just as much of a knock out look.
Not loving Rosario’s dress at all. It’s a great color on her, but far too fussy.
Love Uma’s va-va-voom dress. This is when you pull out the weave. If you want a bun with this dress get one of those giant ones SJP or JLo pulls out.

Can you provide the “magnificent ass jeans” guidelines?  I surely want a pair.

    • Anonymous

      Jane Fonda is Tootsie!

      • Anonymous

You are right!  All she needs is a pair of big ’80s frames and she’s there.

I liked Rosario’s look and Kirsten’s black shoes.  Uma’s dress was too stretch-knit looking for me.  All of that shiny lycra showing across the front gave me double-knit claustrophobia.

    • Anonymous

I completely agree that Ms. Thurman is stunning, and womanly but . . . I just can’t find a “holy shit, she looks amazing!” lurking about in the background let alone leaping to the fore, even though I think both her body and undergarments ARE amazing to pull this dress off so well.  I *think* MilaXX  hit on it by saying she needs more impressive hair, but I’m  not sure. The dress is stunning and regal but it doesn’t make HER stunning and regal, and I feel like it should.

Fonda is stunning in a way that reminds me, somehow of a National Monument. Everything I thought or said about Thurman’s body and undergarments is also true, in spades, for Fonda, allowing for the decades between them.  I think the suggestion she should  maybe have gone with red, instead might cure the Monument impression.

I just can’t feel the Chanel on Dunst. Maybe I’m just not in a mood for red carpet clothes. But I think the jacket shown with this gown on the runway balances and completes the chiffon-like party that is the skirt, and the look is unfinished without it. Not that I think Dunst has the coloring to wear so much shiny silver next to her face, so ditching the jacket was a rational thing to do. But still. Meh.

Dawson is fine, I think your critique is valid.

    • Anonymous

I’m starting to hate Chanel like I hate Marchesa. But Kiki looks fine.
You are being too hard on your gal-pal; Rosario looks great. Not my fave dress but the color is gorg on her and she looks stunning.
I do have to admit – resentfully – that Uma looks great. I love the dress. The color. Damn!

    • Anonymous

I think Kirsten looks mostly great. The hair is “meh” and the face she gives isn’t good, but overall I like the dress…except for that weird silver blotch on the belly. Rosario looks fabulous from the back. Uma really did kill it though. Gorgeous!

Agree with you on Uma and HSSLA Dress.  Please in a feature elaborate: “Just like every guy should find the cut of jeans that makes his ass look magnificent (and every guy can).”

I don’t like that weird stuff hanging off Kirsten’s dress at the bottom.  It’s like the spider web material you put up in your windows for Halloween.

    • Anonymous

Even before I scrolled down, as soon as I saw Uma’s dress, I actually said out loud, “Holy shit, she looks amazing!”  Then I read what you guys wrote and laughed.  Absolutely stunning.

    • http://twitter.com/project_pandora Rachel S.

Before I read your comments about Uma’s dress, I went “holy shit!” outloud. True story. Holy shit indeed.

Jane Fonda looks more like Nancy Reagan by the day. This is not a good thing.

TLo, you speak with such authority – would you mind devoting a post to jean cut and man-ass?  My husband’s rear is pretty nice (he’s a former athlete) but I feel he often dresses it poorly – high waist, constricted junk, inseam length creeping towards a highwater mark…   We were in our prime during the 80s and I’m not sure he feels comfortable in any cut outside of what has that 1980s feel on his body.  If you agree, maybe he would allow me to take a couple of pictures and I can send them in?

    • http://profiles.google.com/mochizukisan kyasarin mochizuki

Funny how Rosario Dawson’s your fence-jumper; mine, too! She’s been a girl-crush of mine for ages. She gorgeous and funny, and that dress is not worthy of her.

I’ve loved Uma Thurman’s choices in shoes.

Why does Ms. Dunst have tin foil over her hoo-hah? Did she have a waiter doggie-bag it for her so she could make it to the red carpet in time?

    • Anonymous

Uma was hands down the best dressed at Cannes this year, She looked Fabulous everytime she stepped on the red carpet. She saved the show stopper for last! LOVE The Total look!

    • Anonymous

I agree. Uma put them all to shame at Cannes this year. That dress is to-die-for gorgeous on her.
I wouldn’t normally even like Rosario Dawson’s dress, but she makes it worth a second (and third) look. The fabric is actually quite stunning, maybe the bottom’s too much and it should’ve been straight metallic all the way down. But overall, I really like it. She has a great smile and her lipstick’s a beautiful color.
      Jane Fonda is amazing, still.
I don’t think Kirsten’s dress is right for Cannes. Too frou-frou.

I have never done this before, but when I saw the first pic of Uma, i said “F U, Uma!”  She looks THAT good…
